Taking the Ouch Out

Try saying ommmm instead of ouch. Meditation has been shown to improve chronic pain. The researchers at the University of Charlotte in North Carolina  performed a variety of studies and discovered that all you need are a few 20 minute meditation sessions.

For the study the participants received a variety of electrical shocks. They discovered that after three daily meditation sessions focused on breathing all of the participants had noticeably less pain through the use of mindful meditation.

Other methods were tried as well. The participants were distracted, and asked to do complex math problems, or answer questions. But the clear winner was meditation. Most stated that they received relief after only a few sessions. Of course practicing over time will bring long term effects. You can download free mindful meditation similar to that used in the study by clicking HERE.

Just a friendly reminder that meditation is not a substitute for medical care by your health care provider.

A Simple Meditation

Meditation is a calm spot in my day, a time for being still.  Mind and body.
“Imagine a hot tub for the mind. That is what meditation is; it can bathe your mind in relaxing thoughts.” —Eknath Easwaran
Work can be stressful and we all need a moment to embrace a simple and quick three to five minutes meditation that stills the chaos around us.
Think of something beautiful something that makes you feel good.
Stop your brain’s cycle of chaos long enough to focus on that positive image.
You will feel relaxed and better able to deal with your next project.

A Friendship Prayer

No matter how you pray, the importance of prayer goes without saying.
As you bring your body to rest and focus on prayer you support your body and mind's state of well being.
A prayer for yourself or for others opens your heart to receive blessings and to speak directly to your maker.

Friendship Prayer by Katherine Corrigan

A prayer for you my friend.
I bow my head and ask our
Lord and Savior to bless you.
To send his angels to watch over you.
To keep you strong and balanced.
I asked him to wrap his love around you.
To dry your tears.
To lift your heart.
To bring his joy upon you.
To provide light when you are in the dark.
To guide you when you have lost your way.
To remind you, that you, are loved.
I bow my head and gratefully  say
Thank you
For our Friendship.
Amen

Shoulder Press Yoga Pose

  • Squat with your feet a little less than shoulder width apart, knees wide.
  • Tilt your torso forward between your inner thighs. Keep your torso low, raise your hips until your thighs become close to parallel to the floor.
  • Tuck your upper left arm and shoulder as much as possible under the back of your left thigh just above the knee, and place your left hand on the floor at the outside edge of your left foot, fingers pointing forward. Then repeat on the right. As you do this the upper part of your back will round.
  • Press your inner hands firmly against the floor and slowly begin to rock your weight back, off your feet and onto your hands. As you straighten your arms, your feet will lift lightly off floor, not by raw strength but by carefully shifting your center of gravity.

  • Squeeze your outer arms with your inner thighs, and cross your right ankle over your left ankle. Look straight ahead. Hold for 30 seconds, then bend your elbows and lightly release your feet back to the floor with an exhale.
  • Repeat the pose a second time with the left ankle on top.
